MORNING THOUGHTS ☕️: I woke up thinking “wow…we have a BUSY week ahead. Games, prom, guests…” But then, I caught myself and remembered:
I DON’T DO BUSY.
busy (adj): not at leisure; full of activity; occupied.
How about some synonyms: unavailable, overloaded, swamped, hustling.
Yeah. I ditched that world years ago. It’s a hard one to shake. One of the hardest. We value busy. We undervalue stillness. We value having a full calendar. We undervalue having one where very little is written in. We’re supposed to be producing…on the daily…proving our worthiness and value to society (and ourself).
My calendar now looks fairly clear…except for my kid’s activities. That means we have a FULL week of opportunities to laugh, hear stories from guests, cheer on and encourage teenagers as they play sports, watch them dress up and feel like princesses.
full (adj): abundant; containing all that can be held; complete.
It’s a re-frame for sure…and a choice…and it can take time to get un-busy…and there are days I feel crazy because I’m NOT busy like the rest of the world…and I sit and wonder if I’m “doing enough.” And then, I wonder, who created the value system of “enough”, who holds the imaginary bar we measure enough by? That bar that always got moved up a little bit more as soon as I got close to it?
I’m taking my bar back. ENOUGH is enough. Today, enough may look like setting a lovely table for friends to join us. Tomorrow, enough may look like something else.
If you’re busy, and have a busy week ahead…perhaps do two things: start finding ways you can take things OFF of your plate..and re-frame the things that are on it.
Let’s have a FULL week … full of opportunities for joy and laughter and love and friends and family and listening and being still.
Love you all.
