I woke up this morning thinking about identities…old and new. And why our old identities try to pull us BACK so often when our new identities beckon us FORWARD. Here are a few things I jotted down about my own.
OLD IDENTITY:
{I NEED to}:
Produce
Perform
Be the best
Work the hardest
Climb the ladder
Be seen
Be recognized
Be a leader
Rely on self
Protect myself
Look out for #1
My old identity was rooted in performance because I didn’t know who I was or my value or worth and so I felt I had to BE more and DO more in order to be found valuable.
NEW IDENTITY:
{I GET to}:
Live from rest
Just be
Operate from peace
Serve
Love
Follow
Not compare
Not compete
Not strive
Rely on others
Be vulnerable
These are just a few but you get the point.
Laying down the old to embrace the new (which isn’t really new because it was the OG before the world came in and tried to tell us who we were supposed to be) can be hard. It’s a journey and the only way I’ve walked out of one and into the other was by holding Jesus’ hand and listening to him more than others and more than myself.
It’s a journey worth taking.
